Airlines Make Money By Giving Bags A Free Flight

Southwest Airlines has a Bags Fly Free promotion which seems to be a great deal for consumers who are not being charged for checked baggage like on the other airlines. In fact this is really a great deal for the airline because they are able to cut down the loading time by having bags checked.

This means less people are wasting time trying to stuff bags into the overhead bins when they know that they won’t fit. Faster loading means the planes can take off faster which means better flight times for them. This leads to better ratings and perception of the airline, which encourages people to want to fly with them even more…which leads to increased revenue.

I will not be flying any time soon and I certainly do not think I will be flying on Southwest so I do not see how this will affect me yet. What has your flying experience been lately and how do you think this will play out for Southwest as opposed to other airlines?

  1. Honestly I don’t see how they’re making that much money by less people loading carry-on luggage as opposed to the fact that they are highly marketing their free bags because that would make more sense than the time factor. Then again, I haven’t been on a plane in awhile so who knows it might really take people that long.

  2. This is a great idea because I know how frustrating it is to see people trying to carry large amounts of luggage onto the plane. Now they can just check them in instead of cramming everything into the overhead compartment.

  3. Clever use of marketingspeak. The word FREE carries such impact that they will try to slip it in somewhere, just for the impact it has on consumers decision making. This too shall fade into obscurity eventually…..

  4. We do travel …and it is ridiculous how much money they want you to pay… for a small bag.
I do fly on the airlines that has this benefit on free 2 luggage.
