I have been thinking about getting a cat. I could get one now and have a cute little bundle of furry love for my Christmas. I have always loved cats and I feel lonely in my apartment away from all my friends with just the
1. Fish
2. Plant number one
3. Plant number two
The animal shelter where I live has cats for $10 each because they are running into an overcrowding situation.
I called the apartment complex to find out the costs of getting a cat and here are the two options they gave me.
Option One:
If the cat is less than 12 months old then there is a$500 deposit.
$250 is refundable upon move out.
$10 monthly fee for ‘pet rent’.
I thought that was a bit high but then the lady in the office went on to explain that there was another option for cat lovers.
Option Two:
If the cat is more than 12 months old then there is a $300 deposit.
$150 is refundable upon move out.
$10 monthly fee for ‘pet rent’.
I asked why the deposit for the kitten was bigger than that of the older cat and they said it is because kittens were more likely to do damage since they are babies and don’t know any better.
So the question I have now is do I get the cat or do I just put that off for some other time? I would really love to hear your opinions so drop a line and let me know.
Getting a pet is big commitment. Our furry loved ones often stick around 10, even 15 years. So there’s more to consider than your current apartment situation. How will a cat affect any moves you need to make in the future?
I decided to put off getting a pet until I had a family that could share in the responsibilities and enjoyment. Of course, I wanted a dog instead of a cat. My brother’s cat seems to handle his work schedule fine. I don’t think my dog could handle the regular separation.
I always thought about getting a cat too. I live by myself, and I find that I’m often lonely. But starting this coming year, I will be working and going back to school. Cats seem to be easier to take care and would be able to handle the separation better than dogs (my pitbull back at my mom’s house whines everytime she’s by herself or if I leave – I don’t think she ever been by herself).
Have you thought about getting TWO cats? I did a lot of research on adopting animals, and they say adopting two cats is better than just one, just to give your furry friend a playmate when you’re gone.
Thanks for the advice guys.
@ Meg….I never thought of getting two cats. I figured the cat could entertain himself with toys while I was gone.
In light of some more medical procedures that I have coming up I have decided to hold off on getting the cat for now.
Ouch, that is pretty expensive for a deposit. I love cats as well but the apts. where I live don’t allow pets… even though nearly everyone has a dog… even the resident security guy!
So, I vote, get a kitty!
Update on January 20th, 2009…I decided to get a cat. I am writing a post about him right now so come back and check out the post.
